Keiko Ishii
I have a strong interest in the extent to which culturally sanctioned styles of communication influence cognition. I have conducted a series of studies which show that East Asians, who are familiar with high-context communication practices, are more likely to pay attention to contextual information (e.g., vocal tone) in the comprehension of emotional utterances, whereas Americans, who are familiar with low-context communication practices, are more likely to pay attention to verbal meaning. I have recently conducted studies to examine the extent to which culture is inscribed into the brain by using event-related potentials (ERP), genotyping, and behavioral paradigms.
